The NHS Scotland Academy will work with the Scottish Government and partners to support the National Treatment Centres Programme (NTC) through accelerated workforce development. It is estimated that an additional 1,500 roles will be delivered through this project, supporting workforce needs within NHSScotland and broader health and social care.

This will be broken down into the following work streams.

Stream 1: Foundations in Perioperative Practice

The first priority of the NTCs’ Accelerated Workforce Programme will offer accelerated education and training through a hub and spoke approach to Band 5 Registered scrub nurses and recovery practitioners.

This programme has been developed following the success of NHS Golden Jubilee peri-operative training programme. Formed of pre-operative, peri-operative and post-operative subjects, learners will complete a post-graduate programme through formal teaching.

Stream 2: Anaesthetic Assistants

In collaboration with NHS Boards across Scotland, the Anaesthetic Assistant Programme (AAP) offers development and career opportunities to learners preparing for the role of anaesthetic assistant.

Building on the existing Core Competence Framework for Anaesthetic Assistants will provide additional learning in a range of areas, including immersive simulation. Through high quality training and education, learners will complete the programme ready join the theatre workforce and deliver safe and patient-centred care.

Stream 3: Surgical First Assistants

Development and delivery of an education and training programme for Surgical First Assistants will be delivered through classroom and skills lab-based learning. This evolving programme will incorporate immersive clinical skills and simulation training for future surgical first assistants.
