High Volume Cataract Surgery

NHS Scotland Academy has created a new digital resource to support the implementation of Step 7 of the national Centre for Sustainable Delivery’s (CfSD) High Volume Cataract Surgery (HVCS) Blueprint: Create a High Performing Team.

The Blueprint, laid out in the publication Improving the Delivery of Cataract Surgery in Scotland: a Blueprint for Success lays out a series of principles and practical actions to support health boards across the country to deliver high volume, high quality, specialist care.

To support this, NHS Scotland Academy has created a new digital resource aimed at clinical team members. It assists with role development for both registered and unregistered team members in 4 key units:

  • Consent
  • Marking the skin
  • Prepping and Draping
  • Eye Drop Administration

Units 1-4 will be of interest to registered team members.

Unit 4 will be mainly of interest to non-registered team members.

All of these resources can be accessed via HVCS Turas Learn homepage.

Unit Details

Unit 1: Consent

This unit provides information on the consent process, along with the professional and legal frameworks underpinning it. It will take about 60 minutes to complete and is written primarily for registered team members.

Access the Unit at: HVCS - U1 - Consent

Unit 2: Marking the skin

Marking the Skin covers process for marking the operative site before cataract surgery and the professional and legal frameworks underpinning it. It will take about 60 minutes to complete and is written primarily for registered team members.

Access the Unit at: HVCS - U2 - Surgical Site Marking

Unit 3: Prepping and Draping

This unit covers the process for prepping and draping the surgical site prior to cataract surgery and the professional and legal frameworks underpinning it. It will take about 60 minutes to complete and is written primarily for registered team members.

Access the Unit at: HVCS - U3 - Surgical site prepping and draping

Unit 4: Eye Drop administration

The process of eye drop administration and the professional and legal frameworks underpinning it.

This module provides a theoretical basis to support knowledge, understanding and skill development in the eye drop administration process which should be applied in combination with practice-based learning in your own clinical area.

This may include checking, administering and documenting eye drops and the Mydriasert ophthalmic insert for Healthcare Support Workers (HCSWs) who will be assessed as having acquired the necessary skills and competencies to do so.

It will take about 60 minutes to complete and is written primarily for non-registered team members.

Access the Unit: HCS - U4 - Eye drop admin
