What is the National Bronchoscopy and EBUS Training Programme?

The National Bronchoscopy and Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) Training Programme has been developed to improve lung cancer outcomes for patients across Scotland.

The programme will deliver training in basic bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound and transbronchial needle aspiration of mediastinal lymph nodes.

The programme will be delivered over a 3 year period and will train 45 respiratory trainees in basic bronchoscopy, and approximately 40 senior trainee consultants in endobronchial ultrasound and transbronchial needle aspiration.

The training curriculum will be designed to improve standards and outcomes for patients across Scotland.

Learners will undertake an immersive training experience through the use of high fidelity endoscopy simulators, funded by NHS Education for Scotland, which provide real clinical scenarios in both basic bronchoscopy and EBUS.

There are now six simulators across Scotland with the latest training package available.

Through the essential skills and confidence gained during high fidelity training, patients will undergo procedures in a more relaxed environment, reducing discomfort to learners and patients, and minimising service disruption.

Course Structure

EBUS 1 day course

This has been developed in collaboration with esteemed international faculty and will be a one day course incorporating didactic lectures with hands on cadaver experience.
