The NHS Scotland Academy runs a National Perioperative Training Programme to accelerate workforce development.

What is the Accelerated Anaesthetic Practitioner Programme?

In collaboration with NHS Boards across Scotland, the Accelerated Anaesthetic Practitioner Programme (AP) offers development and career opportunities to learners preparing for the role of anaesthetic practitioner.

Building on the existing Core Competence Framework for Anaesthetic Practitioners, the programme provides additional learning in a range of areas, including immersive simulation. This competence framework requires learners to receive adequate clinical exposure and knowledge acquisition to be able to show competence.

Through high quality training and education, learners complete the programme ready to join the theatre workforce and to deliver safe and patient-centred care.

National Perioperative Training: Anaesthetic Practitioner available on TURAS Learn.

Course Structure

Learners participate in a 26-week programme consisting of 8 workshop days at NHS Forth Valley's Scottish Centre for Simulation and Clinical Human Factors in Larbert.

The workshops use a blended learning approach and simulation to focus on:

  • emergencies
  • advanced airway management
  • obstetrics
  • paediatrics

Learners will be given skills acquisition and training time during the workshops to optimise the learning experience.

Who are we?

This programme is delivered by a multi-professional team with expertise relating to each individual workshop topic.
