NHS Scotland Academy was delighted to welcome Scotland's Chief Nursing Officer, Professor Aisha Holloway, and Interim Deputy Chief Nursing Officer, Claire Pearce, to learn more about the Academy's national education and workforce development programmes.
The visit began with an overview of the Academy's background, highlighting the collaborative work between NHS Golden Jubilee and Public Services Delivery (PSD) Scotland to support workforce development across health and social care.
Professor Holloway and Claire Pearce then visited the National Endoscopy Training Programme, where they saw first-hand how learners develop their skills through a blend of simulation-based training and clinical experience. The visit included live links to procedures taking place within the NHS Golden Jubilee’s Surgical Centre, providing an opportunity to demonstrate how education is embedded alongside patient care.
The delegation also visited the Skills and Simulation Centre, where they observed simulation training designed to help learners build confidence and competence in a safe environment before applying their skills in clinical practice.
The visit continued with the National Ultrasound Training Programme, where the team showcased how learners undertake supervised scanning of real patients within dedicated training facilities. This innovative approach supports the development of Scotland's future ultrasound workforce while also providing additional scanning capacity for patients.
The visit provided an opportunity to discuss the Academy's role in developing a sustainable healthcare workforce and supporting national priorities through high-quality education, training and innovation.
