NHS Scotland Academy's Skills and Simulation team support the Scottish Organ Donation Simulation Course.
Our Skills and Simulation team recently supported a training event delivered by the Scottish Organ Society.
The course focused on withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment in Donation after Circulatory Death (DCD), a highly sensitive and specialised area of care. To make the training as realistic as possible, the Scottish Organ Society worked closely with our simulation team to develop a high-fidelity, realistic scenario that reflected real-life practice.
Dr Laura Barry, Consultant in Intensive Care and Anaestesia, who led the training from the Scottish Organ Society praised the team’s commitment and professionalism:
“The team were fantastic. They took time to understand the organ donation process in detail, which allowed them to create a training environment of an exceptionally high standard.”
Our simulation technicians played a key role in delivering the scenario, ensuring everything ran smoothly on the day. The team also provided logistic support, welcoming participants and helping the day run seamlessly.
Dr Barry continued: “Communication with the simulation team was always timely and responsive, making the organising process much easier.”
The course also benefitted from the flexible and spacious design of the Academy’s facilities:
“The physical space at the Academy is amazing. It allowed us to accommodate a large number of faculty and candidates without it ever feeling crowded. We were also able to use the space creatively to simulate real-life communication scenarios in a relative’s room setting.”
Following the success of the event, the Scottish Organ Society are now exploring opportunities to develop further training in partnership with the Academy team based at NHS Golden Jubilee.
“We’re so grateful for all the support and look forward to working together in the future.”
NHS Blood and Transplant are now exploring future training opportunities with the Academy team at NHS Golden Jubilee.
